There have been thunderbird sightings from different
countries around the world, and southwestern states
in the USA, but no place comes close to the number of
sightings as Pennsylvania, USA.
There have been reports of thunderbird sightings
throughout Pennsylvania, but most of the sightings
come from areas known as the Black Forest region
which encompasses Clinton, Potter, Lycoming, Tioga,
Cameron, and McKean counties. These areas are
sparsely populated state forest and game lands.
In a 1945 sighting, a girl had been just dropped off her
school bus, when she saw the shadow of something pass
over her. Looking up she saw a bird that was huge, much
bigger than any eagle or buzzard. She noted that the
birds wings were straight out, and were not flapping, it
eventualy soared away.
In a 1973 sighting, a man at first thought he saw an
airplane flying across a field before he realized it was a
bird, gliding about six to ten feet above the ground beside
the car. I didn't think it possible, he said, "the wings
appeared to be twenty feet wide." It was "dirty brown,"
with a large beak and very level, stiff wings. The bird didn't
flap but turned on edge and disappeared into woods
bordering the farm.
In a 2001 report, a man noticed a huge grayish-black
creature soaring overhead, at first thinking it was a small
airplane or ultralight aircraft! This witness observed the
bird for at least 20 minutes, clearly seeing its fully
feathered body and confidently estimating its wingspan
to be about 15 feet and its body length at about 5 feet.
A neighbor of this witness claimed to have seen the
creature the next day, describing it as "the biggest bird I
ever saw."
In a 2002 report, the giant bird was seen by several
witnesses flying over ANCHORAGE, Alaska. The actual
news article said: A bird the size of a small airplane was
recently said to be seen flying over southwest Alaska,
puzzling scientists, the Anchorage Daily News reported
this week.
Webmasters Comments About This Case:
Native Americans had thunderbird sightings for hundreds
of years. The said the thunderbird is a powerful spirtual
being, whom would often bee seen soaring when there
was a thunderstorm, to help conceal it.
The Comanche tribes call it: baa, and the Potawatomi
indians call it: chequah. According to the indians, the
thunderbird would soar down, and seize it's victim by the
shoulders and then carry it away to a nearby barren
mountain top or ledge, where the victim was eaten. The
thunderbird could easily lift and carry away a deer or
human.
Again like in almost all of the creature reports and their
history, the native americans have known about these
beings long before white men started reporting them.
The thunderbird is a very interesting creature to me, because when I was a young man of 12 years of age, I saw one soaring
over the tree tops above some property my dad used to own at the time. It has always been in my mind, and I will never
forget it. I would often walk in the woods, and catch minnows and crawfish in our creek. One sunny afternoon, while
standing near the creek, I happened to hear a shrill or strange sound and as I looked upwards, ahead of me I could see
this giant bird soaring slowly over the tree tops, heading my way. I stood motionless, resting against the side of a tree
and watched as this giant bird, soared directly overhead, and passed by.
As the bird went by, I was scared to death, this thing was huge! I had seen numerous turkey buzzards, great horned owls,
hawks and a rare eagle before, but this bird easily dwarfed all of the other birds I have seen. The wing span of this bird
was 20-30 feet. I could see the bird easily as it passed overhead, due to a clearing of tree tops above me. The bird was all
black, and had a massive head and beak, I saw it moving it's head from side to side as it soared by, like it was looking
for movement on the ground below. This thing was so large, that it could of easily carried me away.
