Interesting Sighting Details of the Ri - Mermaid
It’s quite common for kids to watch cartoons and read fairy tale stories. These are dismissed as plain old science fiction in modern times. But much to the world’s surprise, there is recent news that shows the possibility of a real live mermaid which could have been the basis to the well known Little Mermaid story most children have grown to love.
To some cryptozoologists, the mermaid is actually a beautiful version of an unidentified creature called Ri. The Ri is an aquatic animal that has half human and half fish form. It may really sound like a mermaid based on some common descriptions but the air-breathing mammal may not be that attractive to look at. Based on some research, the Ri also takes a head of a sea lion which gives an unattractive overall look.
In the past, many tourists have flocked to the town of Kiryat Yam in Israel in hopes of seeing a real live mermaid. News as well as rumors spread like wildfire that a mermaid is frequenting the area when a certain man named Shlomo Cohen claimed he and his friends saw one of these creatures this year.
Cohen told his story in an interview saying, "I was with friends when suddenly we saw a woman laying on the sand in a weird way. At first I thought she was just another sunbather, but when we approached she jumped into the water and disappeared. We were all in shock because we saw she had a tail."
But this unexplainable sighting is not the first one seen in the area. In fact, reports like these are not common in Israel alone but also in the waters of New Ireland and Papua New Guinea.
The International Society of Cryptozoology acknowledges the Ri creature since the 1980s. The group has decided to include it in the list of cryptids when sightings of the said creature were often reported in New Ireland during that time. Old records also show that this spectacular creature was already acknowledged by locals since the early 1600s when the mammal was spotted in St. James Harbor located in Newfoundland.
Unidentified species of animals like the Ri are very interesting. Unfortunately, no formal studies have been conducted yet because the creatures are really hard to find. In fact, the local government of Israel decided to give an astounding $1 million for any person who can capture a photo of this very mysterious Ri mermaid.
