Interesting Sighting Details of the Chullachaqui

A forest spirit that can easily transform to a common forest animal, the chullachaqui is a creature that many are scared of. This creature has been encountered by locals and tourists in Brazil and Peru where the said creature is dominant.

Like other mystic creatures, the chullachaqui stays in the deep jungles of the forest. Some has encountered the forest spirit near the Chullachaquicaspi tree which is believed to be the home of the creature. The tree and the creature have very intriguing similarities. Both have a “twisted foot” and can bring you good or bad luck. They share some irregularities that some might find bizarre. The plant grows in sandy soil and doesn’t grow deep roots which are quite unusual for a tree that can grow tall. On the other hand, a distinctive limping leg of an animal can be noticed when the creature shows itself as “human”.

The name chullachaqui was not taken from the name of the tree. The creature and plant as well were given similar names based on its odd appearance. Based on the native Quechuan dialect, chulla means false while chaqui means foot. The ancient spirit is commonly called as supay (demons) and sacharuna (jungle people) and kidnaps people, mostly children to turn them into chullachaquis as well.

Based on Iquitos Times, one of the popular sightings of the creature was last September 2007 when a group of tourists were visiting San Andres, Peru. The group was led by an experienced guide as they walk to the forest on their way to meet some Bora Indians. On their way, they came to a middle of a clearing with three different paths. The guide saw a small boy and asked him which path to take. Unfortunately, the boy wasn’t really a boy but a chullachaqui that led them deeper into the forest. After a while, the guide realized that they were taking up a wrong route as if he has just woken up from a trance. The group managed to safely get out of the forest but that was really a close one.

Most of the time, chullachaquis only make people lose their way but there was an instance when a certain Don Agustin Rivas bravely interacted with the said forest spirit. He described the creature as “a small man who had an aged face, curved nose, small brilliant eyes, and very small mouth, and was missing one foot”. Since he immediately recognized the chullachaqui, he paid respect to it by giving it a pipe to smoke. After that, he had a good hunting time in the forest.
